Mahabodhi was born Glenn Burton in Hull, England in 1954. Concurrent with his studies at Manchester University in the1970s came an explosion of interest that encompassed the worlds of politics, art and eastern spiritual traditions, and a curiosity about the relationships between different facets of human experience: the arts, the sciences and religions.

His interest in buddhism became more concrete when in 1988 he came into contact with the Friends of the Western Buddhist Order at its West London centre and began practicing meditation and buddhism. He was ordained Mahabodhi in 1997. A populist by inclination, his interest has centred on making buddhism more accessible, which has manifested in a contribution to the fields of ritual and imagination at the Manchester Buddhist Centre and at the Buddhafield Festival in Devon. He enjoys leading meditation classes, and more recently has been exploring the field of mindfulness within the buddhist tradition in an attempt to make its theory and practice more understandable and accessible. He currently lives and works in Manchester.
